Bushfire Theatre of Performing Arts is proudly celebrating 50 years

Bushfire Theatre of Performing Arts is proudly celebrating 50 years as an inner-city professional theatre company. Our journey began on the campus of my alma mater, Temple University, continued on 112 Market Street and since 1978 we have called the old Locust Movie house on 52nd Street the home of Bushfire Theatre of Performing Arts.

As you can imagine, reaching the 50-year mark has had its highs and lows. We have enjoyed the glory days when grant funding was more plentiful, experienced the decline of funding for smaller arts organizations of color, survived the impact of a global pandemic and exist today to say we are still here and have been here! Through it all we have worked consistently to live up to our mission! The mission of Bushfire Theatre of Performing Arts is to provide professional theatre to our West Philly community and the entire city. We also offer opportunities to our community to develop as actors, playwrights, directors, technicians and more. Our Youth Arts and Education Programs support our goal to foster artistic development, aesthetic engagement, increased literacy proficiency, discipline and focus among young children and adolescents. In 1983, we became the first African American professional theatre company in the city by becoming members of the professional actor’s union of America, Actors Equity Association which enabled our artists to become members of the union.

The theme of our 50th Anniversary is a New Paradigm in Giving: Planting Seeds for an Artistic Future!

I am supporting the BushFire Theatre because I know how important it is to have a stake in how the narrative of our people is being crafted. The arts offer an opportunity to connect with a broad range of community members across ages and identities.

This journey is not for me alone; I need your support as a member of the committee and as an investor. Ask yourself: the last time you watched a video or podcast, listened to a song, or read something, were you happy with the way you were represented? Here is your opportunity to do something about.

The investment is the cost of a nameplate on the back of your seat: $400 to memorialize your commitment to the Black Arts movement. Along with your nameplate, you receive a full season of main-stage plays and all workshop productions in our adjoining spaces. BushFire Theatre of the Performing Art is a 501(c)3 nonprofit and contributions are tax deductable.

Sincerely,

John SPencer
